What is The Ontario Fire Code?
The Ontario Fire Code (Ontario Reg. 388/97) is a regulation made under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act as a companion document to the Ontario Building Code.
This document provides for the safety of occupants in existing buildings through the elimination or control of Fire Hazards in and around buildings, the maintenance of Life Safety Systems in buildings, the establishing of a Fire Safety Plan in those buildings where necessary and the Retrofitting of certain occupancies.
The Fire Code is enforced by the local Fire Department, being the authority having jurisdiction.

Article 1.1.1.1. of the Fire Code states that the Owner is responsible for carrying out the provisions of this
code. The penalties for not complying with this code can be quite severe with fines of up to
$50,000 for individuals and up to $100,000 for corporations. This may be in addition to 1 year imprisonment.
Owners and prospective purchasers of industrial, commercial and income producing
residential properties should be made aware of their responsibilities under the Ontario Fire Code.
